Astra Pro Theme: Why I Chose It for My WordPress Websites
The Astra Pro theme has become one of the tools I rely on when building WordPress websites.
But before we talk about themes, templates, page builders, or customization options, I think we need to begin with a more important question.
Why do you need a website in the first place?
Whether you are searching for books to read on vacation, deciding which audiobook to listen to during the journey, comparing business tools, looking for a service, or researching a company, one thing is certain:
Facebook is not the only place you use.
Neither is Instagram.
Neither is TikTok.
Social networks are important.
I use them.
I write about them.
They can help you reach people, start conversations, build trust, and introduce your work to a wider audience.
But they are only one part of your online presence.
At some point, you may become ready for the next step.
Your own digital asset.
Your website.
Your Website Is More Than an Online Business Card

For a long time, websites were often treated like digital brochures.
A company created a homepage.
It added an address, phone number, a short description, and perhaps a few photographs.
That was enough.
Today, a website can play a much larger role.
It can explain:
- who you are
- who you help
- what you offer
- what makes your approach different
- why people should trust you
- where visitors should begin
- how they can contact you
- how they can join your newsletter
- what they can learn from you
- which products or services they can explore
Your website can host your articles.
It can introduce your services.
It can collect email subscribers.
It can present your portfolio.
It can sell physical or digital products.
It can connect visitors with your social networks, community, videos, tools, and offers.
That is why I no longer see a website as an isolated page on the internet.
I see it as an important part of a digital ecosystem.
A Website Gives Your Online Presence a Home
Social networks give you access to existing audiences.
That is one of their greatest advantages.
You do not need to convince people to join Facebook before they see your Facebook post.
You do not need to teach people how to use Instagram before they watch your Reel.
The audience is already there.
But there is a trade-off.
You operate on a platform you do not own.
The interface can change.
The algorithm can change.
Your reach can decline.
A feature you use today may disappear tomorrow.
Your account can be restricted, reviewed, or temporarily unavailable.
That does not mean you should stop using social media.
It means social media should not be your entire online strategy.
Your website gives all those activities a central destination.
A Facebook post can lead to an article.
An Instagram visitor can discover your services.
A YouTube viewer can join your newsletter.
A newsletter subscriber can return to your website.
A potential client can learn more about you before sending a message.
Everything begins to connect.
That is the difference between simply appearing online and building an online presence with structure.
Which Theme Should You Choose for Your WordPress Website?
Once you decide to create a WordPress website, another question appears quickly:
Which WordPress theme should you use?
There are thousands of options.
Some are free.
Some are premium.
Some are designed for blogs.
Some focus on ecommerce.
Some look impressive in a demo but become difficult to customize.
Some include so many features that they slow down the website.
Others are fast but provide very little design flexibility.
When I choose a theme, I do not only look at how the demo website appears.
I look at the foundation underneath it.
I want a theme that is:
- fast
- reliable
- regularly updated
- mobile responsive
- flexible
- compatible with important plugins
- suitable for different types of websites
- supported by clear documentation
- simple enough for a beginner
- powerful enough to grow with the project
That combination is one of the main reasons I chose Astra.
What Is the Astra WordPress Theme?
Astra is a WordPress theme developed by Brainstorm Force.
The company was founded in 2009 after initially working on websites and digital projects for clients. Through that experience, its team saw many of the problems that appeared when working with existing themes: limited flexibility, performance issues, difficult customization, and unreliable foundations for client websites.
Astra was officially introduced to the WordPress community in 2017.
According to its creators, the goal was to build a theme that was lightweight, customizable, compatible with page builders, and suitable for different types of websites.
The name also has an interesting meaning.
Brainstorm Force explains that “Astra” can mean a weapon in Sanskrit, Hindi, and Marathi, while in Greek it is connected with the word “star.”
A name alone does not make a good theme.
The adoption that followed is more important.
Astra Became Popular for a Reason

Astra is not a small or experimental WordPress theme that appeared a few months ago.
WordPress.org currently lists more than one million active installations. It also displays a rating of approximately 4.9 out of 5, including more than 6,000 five-star reviews.
Astra’s own website reports a broader user base of more than 1.65 million website owners.
Numbers do not automatically mean that a product is right for everyone.
Popular tools can still have weaknesses.
However, these numbers tell us something important.
Astra has been tested across a very large number of real websites.
Personal blogs.
Business websites.
Portfolios.
Membership sites.
Online stores.
Client projects.
Educational platforms.
That level of adoption creates another advantage.
You can find more documentation, tutorials, discussions, integrations, solutions, and people who already understand how the theme works.
This matters, especially when you are building your first website.
Why I Personally Use the Astra Pro Theme

I have worked on websites for my own projects and for clients.
Over time, I learned that the best tool is not always the tool with the longest list of features.
It is often the tool that gives you the right balance.
Enough control to create what you need.
Enough flexibility to grow.
But not so much unnecessary complexity that every small change becomes a technical project.
That is what I like about the Astra Pro theme.
I can use the same basic foundation for different types of websites while giving each project its own identity.
The result does not have to look like an “Astra website.”
The theme provides the structure.
The branding, layout, content, colors, typography, images, message, and user journey still belong to you.
Here are the main reasons Astra stood out to me.
1. Astra Is Built With Performance in Mind

Website speed matters.
A slow website can frustrate visitors before they even read your headline.
It can affect usability, conversions, and how professional the entire project feels.
Astra describes its core theme as using less than 50 KB on the frontend. Its developers also emphasize clean code, limited HTTP requests, modular functionality, native WordPress tools, and Vanilla JavaScript instead of depending on a heavy framework.
Of course, installing a fast theme does not guarantee a fast website.
You can still slow it down with:
- oversized images
- poor hosting
- too many plugins
- unnecessary scripts
- complicated animations
- badly optimized video
- excessive external tools
The theme is only one part of performance.
But it is an important starting point.
I would rather begin with a lightweight foundation than spend time trying to repair a heavy one later.
2. It Gives Me Design Flexibility Without Starting From Zero
I want control over the appearance of a website.
But I do not want to write custom code for every header, container, button, blog layout, or spacing adjustment.
Astra provides controls for global colors, typography, containers, headers, footers, responsive layouts, blog presentation, and other important design elements.
The free version already includes enough flexibility to build a professional website.
Astra Pro expands that control with more layout options, advanced headers, custom footers, site-building tools, blog controls, WooCommerce features, hooks, white-label options, and deeper typography and spacing settings.
The detailed comparison you provided also shows that Pro adds features such as premium updates, advanced site layouts, custom headers and footers, mega menus, extended blog layouts, ecommerce controls, and stronger integrations with WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads, LearnDash, and LifterLMS.
You may not need every feature immediately.
That is exactly the point.
You can begin with the foundation and activate more control when the project requires it.
3. Astra Works With the Tools I Already Use
A theme should not force the rest of your website into a narrow technical system.
Astra works with the native WordPress block editor and integrates with Spectra, Brainstorm Force’s collection of blocks and website-building tools.
It is also compatible with popular page builders such as Elementor and Beaver Builder.
Beyond page design, Astra supports important WordPress tools and platforms, including WooCommerce, SureCart, Easy Digital Downloads, LearnDash, and LifterLMS.
That flexibility is valuable because your website may change.
Today, you may only need a blog.
Later, you may add a newsletter.
Then a digital product.
Perhaps a course.
Perhaps an online store.
Perhaps a membership area.
Perhaps a service business with forms, appointments, and customer resources.
Choosing a flexible foundation gives you more room to expand without rebuilding everything from the beginning.
4. Starter Templates Can Remove the Blank-Page Problem
One of the hardest parts of building a new website is not always the technology.
It is the blank page.
You install WordPress.
You activate a theme.
Then you look at an empty screen and wonder:
What should go here?
How should the homepage be structured?
Where should the call to action appear?
What should the service section look like?
Astra’s Starter Templates can help with that.
The free Starter Templates plugin includes a library of ready-to-use website designs. You can import a complete design or individual pages and then replace the demonstration content with your own branding, images, and message.
Astra’s documentation currently describes more than 100 ready-to-use templates, with additional premium designs available through paid plans.
I do not recommend importing a template and leaving everything unchanged.
Your website should still look and sound like you.
But a good template can give you a practical starting structure.
Instead of staring at an empty canvas, you begin with something you can improve.
5. It Can Grow From a Blog Into an Online Store
This is especially relevant now that I am writing more about ecommerce.
A blog and an online store may look like two separate projects.
They do not have to be.
Content can help people discover your products.
Educational articles can answer questions before the purchase.
Email marketing can bring visitors back.
An online store can turn that attention into a transaction.
Astra’s free version already integrates with WooCommerce and allows the store’s colors and typography to follow the wider website design.
Astra Pro adds more advanced store features, including expanded shop layouts, product controls, cart and checkout improvements, product galleries, quick view options, and deeper styling controls.
You may not need an online store today.
But it is useful to know that the theme does not become irrelevant when your website grows.
6. Astra Is Supported by a Larger Product Ecosystem
Astra is no longer an isolated WordPress theme.
Brainstorm Force has built a wider collection of tools around WordPress website creation.
That ecosystem includes products for:
- page building
- starter templates
- forms
- schema
- conversion tools
- ecommerce funnels
- website planning
- automation
- website generation
The company also maintains extensive Astra documentation covering installation, customization, headers, footers, sidebars, Pro modules, troubleshooting, code snippets, and other common tasks.
This does not mean you need to install every Brainstorm Force product.
You should only use tools that serve a clear purpose.
But it is reassuring to know the theme belongs to an actively developed ecosystem rather than being an abandoned side project.
Astra Free vs Astra Pro Theme
A common question is:
Do you need Astra Pro?
Not necessarily.
The free Astra theme is a serious theme.
It is not merely an empty demonstration designed to become useless unless you pay.
With Astra Free, you can build:
- a personal website
- a professional blog
- a portfolio
- a basic business website
- a simple WooCommerce store
- a landing page
- a content-based website
You receive responsive design, basic header and footer tools, typography and color controls, container settings, blog controls, schema integration, page-builder compatibility, and access to free Starter Templates.
For many people, that is enough to begin.
Astra Pro becomes more valuable when you want greater control over the design and behavior of the website.
| Astra Free | Astra Pro theme |
|---|---|
| Suitable for starting a professional website | Better for advanced and growing websites |
| Basic colors, typography and layout controls | Deeper colors, typography, spacing and layout controls |
| Standard header and footer builder | Advanced headers, footers, sticky elements and mega menus |
| Basic blog presentation | More blog and archive layouts and controls |
| Basic WooCommerce integration | Advanced shop, product, cart and checkout options |
| Free Starter Templates | Access to more premium design resources, depending on the plan |
| Community documentation and standard help | Premium updates and higher-level support |
| Good for beginners | Useful for businesses, creators, stores and client projects |
My advice is simple.
Start with the free version when you are still learning what you need.
Upgrade when you can clearly identify the limitation you want to remove.
Do not buy a feature only because it exists.
Buy it when it solves a real problem.
A Note About Astra’s Current Plans
Astra’s commercial offer has changed over time.
The current plans do not present Astra Pro only as a standalone collection of theme features.
They increasingly combine the theme with AI-assisted website creation, Starter Templates, Spectra, hosted websites, domain-related benefits, and additional Brainstorm Force tools.
At the time of writing, Astra advertises introductory annual prices of $99 for Astra Pro + AI, $199 for Essential Toolkit + AI, and $279 for Business Toolkit + AI. The stated renewal prices are higher, so readers should always check both the introductory and renewal amount before purchasing.
I will cover those plans separately.
For now, the most important thing is to understand that you do not have to purchase the largest package to begin building.
You can start free.
Who Is Astra For?
I believe Astra is especially suitable for:
Bloggers and content creators
It gives you a clean foundation for articles, categories, author information, featured images, and content-based websites.
Freelancers
You can build a portfolio, describe your services, publish useful content, and create a clear contact path.
Small businesses
Astra works well for service websites, local businesses, consultants, agencies, restaurants, and professional companies.
Ecommerce businesses
Its WooCommerce integration makes it possible to connect content, products, marketing, and checkout within one website.
Beginners
The free theme, Customizer, documentation, and Starter Templates reduce some of the complexity of starting with WordPress.
Web designers and agencies
Astra Pro offers more reusable controls, advanced layouts, client-site tools, and white-label options.
That does not mean Astra is the only good WordPress theme.
It is not.
WordPress has several strong themes and website-building systems.
But Astra is the option I know, use, and feel comfortable recommending because it offers a strong balance between simplicity, flexibility, performance, and long-term potential.
Your Theme Is Important, but It Is Not Your Strategy
There is something else you need to understand.
Astra will not write your message.
It will not define your audience.
It will not create your offer.
It will not automatically bring visitors.
It will not build trust on your behalf.
It will not connect the website with your wider business unless you create that connection.
A theme provides the structure and visual foundation.
Your strategy must answer the bigger questions.
Who are you trying to reach?
What problem do you help solve?
What should a new visitor understand within the first few seconds?
What should they do next?
Read an article?
Book a call?
View a service?
Visit your store?
Join your newsletter?
Enter your community?
A beautiful website without direction is still confusing.
A simple website with a clear purpose can be extremely effective.
How Astra Fits Into Your Digital Ecosystem
If you have been following what I write, you already know that I am interested in connected digital ecosystems.
Not only individual tools.
Not only one social network.
Not only one sales funnel.
A connected system.
Your website can become the center of that system.
Around it, you can connect:
- your social media profiles
- your blog
- your newsletter
- your products
- your services
- your videos
- your community
- your affiliate recommendations
- your online store
- your contact and support channels
Astra helps me build the website layer.
It does not replace the ecosystem.
It gives that ecosystem a home.
That is why choosing a WordPress theme is not only a design decision.
It can become a business decision.
You are choosing the foundation on which your digital asset will grow.
Start With the Free Astra Theme
You do not have to understand every feature before you begin.
You do not need Astra Pro on the first day.
You do not need to create ten pages.
You do not need a complicated funnel.
Start with the foundation.
Install WordPress.
Choose a clean, lightweight theme.
Create the essential pages.

What I Will Cover Next
This article is only the introduction.
In the next parts of this series, I plan to explore:
- Astra Free vs Astra Pro in more detail
- how to install the Astra theme
- how to use Starter Templates
- how Astra works with Gutenberg and Spectra
- important Astra Pro features
- Astra for blogs and content websites
- Astra and WooCommerce
- how to customize headers and footers
- which Astra plan may fit different users
- how I use Astra on my own projects
You do not need to learn everything at once.
The first step is simply understanding why the foundation matters.
Final Thoughts: Why I Chose the Astra Pro Theme

I chose the Astra Pro theme because it gives me room to build.
It is lightweight without feeling empty.
Flexible without becoming unnecessarily complicated.
Beginner-friendly without being limited only to beginners.
It works for blogs, business websites, portfolios, ecommerce projects, and larger digital systems.
Most importantly, it allows the website to evolve.
That matters because your first website will probably not remain exactly the same.
Your message will become clearer.
Your content will grow.
Your audience may change.
You may introduce new services, products, tools, or communities.
A good theme should not stand in the way of that development.
Astra gives me a reliable foundation.
The rest still depends on the work we build on top of it.
And that is exactly how it should be.
